Strengthening Emergency Response for Penn Township
Under Doris Portolese’s leadership as Township Trustee, Penn Township has taken major strides in public safety infrastructure. One of the key achievements is the planning and construction of a new, full-service fire station (Station 13) near the Penn-Harris-Madison School campus. This modern, four-bay facility is designed to house a medic unit, engine company, reserve apparatus, and training facility — enabling faster response times and greater support for both students and residents.
Doris recognized early on that the old station no longer met the demands of the community and championed the funding and partnership efforts needed to bring the new facility to fruition. With an approximate $4.1 million investment, the project stands as a clear example of her commitment to public safety, fiscal stewardship, and collaborative solutions.
In addition, Doris has addressed service-coverage challenges, including ensuring that township fire/EMS resources are focused on the unincorporated areas of Penn Township — protecting taxpayers by clarifying cost and service-responsibility boundaries.
Going forward, the Township under Doris’s guidance remains committed to upgrading fire and emergency services, improving infrastructure, and keeping our community safe and well-served.

Protecting the Most Vulnerable: The Safe Haven Baby Box Initiative
As Penn Township Trustee, Doris Portolese has always believed that good government should serve with both compassion and common sense. One of the initiatives she is most proud of is the installation of a Safe Haven Baby Box at the Penn Township Fire Station — a secure, temperature-controlled unit that allows a mother in crisis to safely and anonymously surrender her newborn into the care of first responders.
Working closely with the Penn Township Fire Department and community partners, Doris led the effort to bring this life-saving resource to the township, ensuring that it could be installed at no cost to local taxpayers through the use of grants and donations. The Baby Box was dedicated in memory of Congresswoman Jackie Walorski, honoring her legacy of faith and service.
Since its installation, the Safe Haven Baby Box has stood as a symbol of hope, compassion, and the township’s commitment to protecting life. Doris views this project as one of the most meaningful accomplishments of her tenure — a reminder that leadership is about taking care of those who cannot care for themselves.
